Francisco van der Niepoort came to Portugal from Holland in 1842 to try his hand at the port trade. Five generations later, Niepoort remains a family business with great-great-grandson Dirk Niepoort establishing it as not only one of the most respected Port houses but also internationally renowned wine producers today. Niepoort’s success with dry wine production has lead the way for the Douro (and for Portugal as a whole) to emerge as a top region on the global stage.
We have long been fans of the inimitable Dirk Niepoort and so we are delighted to now be able to share these great wines with our customers. The Niepoort philosophy is to innovate, maintain tradition and break taboos. You’ve got to love it.
Vertente translates as “aspect” or “hillside”. The grapes come from old vineyards aged between 30 and 60 years old. The wine is aged for about 22 months in french oak. It is bright with black fruit aromas and with smooth tannins.
