Portobello – Celebrated Butter Gin

We’re rather excited about stocking this Gin.

The idea for this gin came from a wonderfully descriptive passage in “Sketches by Boz” from none other than Charles Dickens. In it he describes being in a Gin Palace and goes on to name all the various gins available including “Celebrated Butter Gin”. Naming it Celebrated Butter was almost certainly a marketing tool to indicate it was of superior quality rather like creme de menthe. Fats and creams were enjoyed by the wealthy, certainly if you were a pauper you might eat a bit of bread with dripping but certainly not bread and butter, and so it would have been easily assumed that this would have been a rather expensive and carefully crafted gin for a particularly esteemed clientele.

And so, this gin is made using the very popuiar Portobello Road Gin before being re-distilled using English salted butter, and then sweetened up slightly with just a touch of sugar before being left in barrels for the flavours to harmonise. The result is a creamy, rich gin, with a touch of sweet and a touch of salt. Use as you would the original Portobello Gin. Just remember to conjure up The Gin Palaces of Charles Dickens day when you drink it.
