Plymouth gin as a style was dominant for some time as the gin of choice in many cocktails, it features heavily in the Savoy Cocktail book from 1930 and this inclusion came with some cache. Plymouth Gin Distillery currently dates back to the early 1400s. The refectory room, still part of the distillery, was originally a medieval hall and thus is one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth. The site is protected as a national monument and building of significance.
It was also previously a large merchant’s house in the 16th century, and it has also been a jail, a meeting house in the 17th Century and all the way through to the end of the 18th century. It was remodelled and extended as a gin distillery in 1793, making it the oldest British gin distillery still operating in its original location.
