Plymouth Gin Distillery is (of course) best known for producingPlymouth Gin. It isn’t just a name, it’san actualstyleof gin. It is the only gin in the UK to have a Protected Geographical Indication within the European Union (ok, this is pre Brexit) but; By law, it can only be produced in the town of Plymouth.
This status was awarded after a London distiller began producing a gin and called it Plymouth gin. A legal judgement followed in the 1880’s which sided with Plymouth-based distilleries who sought to protect the name.
Plymouth gin as a style was dominant for some time as the gin of choice in many cocktails, it features heavily in the Savoy Cocktail book from 1930 and this inclusion came with some cache. At Plymouth Gin Distillery, the still which produces all the fabulous gin has not been changed for over 150 years.
Plymouth Gin Distillery currently dates back to the early 1400s. The refectory room, still part of the distillery, was originally a medieval hall and thus is one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth. The site is protected as a national monument and building of significance.
It was also previously a large merchant’s house in the 16th century, and it has also been a jail, a meeting house in the 17th Century and all the way through to the end of the 18th century. It was remodelled and extended as a gin distillery in 1793, making it the oldest British gin distillery still operating in its original location.
Some say the pilgrim fathers spent their last night in England in the building in 1620, before setting sail on the Mayflower on the epic voyage to start a new life in America where they founded a new Plymouth. This is why the Mayflower ship forms Plymouth Gins trademark label today.
This particular gin has been supplied to theRoyal Navy for more than 200 years. It works exceptionally well in cocktails.
