Description
Le Marquis de Calon Sgur is the second wine of the esteemed Chteau Calon Sgur, located in the Saint-Estphe appellation of Bordeaux’s Left Bank. This wine is crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot playing a significant supporting role, and sometimes small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its firm structure and dark fruit profile, while the Merlot adds roundness and a plush texture.
The terroir of Saint-Estphe, characterised by gravel and clay soils, contributes to the wine’s powerful yet refined character. The gravel allows for good drainage, which benefits the Cabernet Sauvignon, while the clay retains moisture, helping to preserve the freshness of the fruit even in warmer vintages. This balance of soils imparts both strength and elegance to the wine.
Le Marquis de Calon Sgur is known for its rich aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry, often accompanied by hints of tobacco, cedar, and earthy tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with well-integrated tannins and a layered complexity of dark fruit, spice, and minerality. The ageing process, which includes time spent in oak barrels, adds depth and subtle notes of vanilla and smoke, enhancing the wine’s complexity.
Although it is more approachable in its youth compared to the grand vin of Chteau Calon Sgur, Le Marquis de Calon Sgur retains the structure and depth that allow it to age gracefully over several years. It offers a long, elegant finish, making it a versatile wine for pairing with hearty dishes such as roasted meats, stews, or mature cheeses. The balance of power and finesse in Le Marquis de Calon Sgur makes it an excellent representation of the Saint-Estphe style, offering a compelling blend of richness, structure, and sophistication.
