Description
Chteau Rabaud-Promis is a renowned estate located in the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux, famous for producing exquisite sweet wines. The vineyard spans around 33 hectares, situated on a prime terroir with a mix of gravel and clay-limestone soils, which are ideal for growing the white grape varieties that define Sauternes wines. The primary grapes used in Chteau Rabaud-Promis wines are Smillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. Smillon dominates the blend, contributing rich texture and honeyed sweetness, while Sauvignon Blanc adds freshness and acidity. Muscadelle imparts aromatic complexity with floral and fruit notes.
Sauternes, where Chteau Rabaud-Promis is located, is celebrated for its unique microclimate, which plays a crucial role in producing its distinctive sweet wines. The nearby Ciron and Garonne rivers create morning mists that encourage the growth of botrytis, or noble rot. This beneficial fungus concentrates the sugars in the grapes while maintaining high acidity, resulting in the complex and luscious character that Sauternes wines are known for. Chteau Rabaud-Promis’ terroir allows for the perfect conditions for botrytis to thrive, leading to highly concentrated, sweet grapes.
The estate has a long history, dating back to the 17th century, and is currently owned by the Dejean family, who have been involved in the management of the chteau for generations. Their dedication to traditional winemaking methods ensures that each vintage is crafted with the utmost care. The grapes are hand-harvested in several passes, selecting only the ones affected by noble rot, which results in low yields but exceptionally high-quality fruit. The winemaking process involves fermentation in French oak barrels, followed by ageing for up to two years, which enhances the wines complexity and adds layers of richness.
Chteau Rabaud-Promis wines are known for their intense flavours and luxurious mouthfeel. The wine typically showcases aromas of apricot, peach, and tropical fruits, alongside notes of honey, candied citrus, and spices. On the palate, it is rich and unctuous, with a balance of sweetness and acidity that prevents the wine from becoming overly cloying. The finish is long and lingering, marked by a refined sweetness and the signature elegance of Sauternes. Over time, the wine develops more complexity, with dried fruit, nuts, and caramelised notes emerging, making it a sought-after choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term ageing.
