Description

Chteau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a highly regarded wine estate located in the Pauillac appellation on Bordeauxs Left Bank. Known for producing classic, powerful Pauillac wines, the estate has a long history dating back to the 16th century and is revered for its consistently high-quality expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux blends.

The vineyard at Chteau Grand-Puy-Lacoste spans around 90 hectares, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up about 75% of the blend. This grape thrives in the gravelly soils typical of Pauillac, contributing to the wine’s structure, intensity, and characteristic dark fruit flavours, such as cassis and blackcurrant. Merlot, which typically constitutes around 20% of the blend, adds softness and roundness to balance the firm tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon. A small percentage of Cabernet Franc is also used to bring aromatic complexity and elegance to the wine.

Pauillac, where Chteau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is situated, is renowned for producing some of the most structured, long-lived wines in Bordeaux, with a unique terroir characterised by its deep gravel soils. These soils provide excellent drainage and promote deep root growth, which allows the vines to access essential nutrients and develop intense, concentrated fruit. The proximity to the Gironde estuary helps to moderate temperatures, protecting the vines from frost in the winter and excessive heat in the summer, creating an ideal growing environment for the estates vineyards.

Chteau Grand-Puy-Lacoste is currently owned by the Borie family, who have managed the estate since 1978. Franois-Xavier Borie, who leads the winemaking team, has overseen significant improvements in both the vineyard and winery, with a focus on sustainable viticulture and precision in the cellar. The winemaking process is traditional yet meticulous, involving hand-harvesting and careful sorting of the grapes, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for around 18 months, with a portion of new oak used to enhance the wines complexity and depth.

In terms of taste, Chteau Grand-Puy-Lacoste produces wines that are powerful yet refined, displaying classic Pauillac characteristics. The wines often exhibit deep, concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry, complemented by notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and a hint of minerality. The firm tannic structure gives the wine a long ageing potential, while the finish is typically long and lingering, with a fine balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins. Over time, the wine evolves to reveal greater complexity and elegance, making it a favourite among collectors and connoisseurs of Bordeaux.
